Why Robotics?
Why should you care about robotics and get yourself in this field?
To keep your attention, let me start with the first statement:
Robotics represents a paradigm change that is inevitable and the change has already started.
All our individual life's is today being affected by robots indirectly, but in the near future we will have a direct benefit and interaction with our own creations.
Robotics field has for a long time under-delivered on the promisses and dreams of the early age of robotics (and computing), so what has changed today that will spawn a robot revolution?
Power, size and price of computation. This is the single most important technological advance that is essential to build intelligence into your machines. While our computers is far behind human capabilities in computation, we will still be able to build intelligent machines that will be helpfull for us.
Up until now, robots has primarily had a precence in the world of manufacturing and automation. They handle dangerous tasks and can do them repetetive over and over again. They produce everything at higher quality and higher efficiency that any human can do. The intelligence required for these machines to operate is not much, and most of them are running on computers that are many times slower than your own laptop.
Getting robots into the ever changing environments of offices and homes requires a whole lot more computation and intelligence. This is a big challenge ahead of us that we are slowly but steadily making progress on.
Every week there is lots of news within the robotics field and the advances in the various sub-fields keeps being unveiled. The time is now to take the opportunity to be part of the robot revolution, either as an programmer, mechanical engineer, venture capital investor, scientist or just generally interested in the things that shapes our future.
